Beautiful light from a break in the clouds touches down on some fertile farmland. Clouds cast big shadows on the ground that the sun breaks.

Enjoy your stay.

About

Hello, my name is Andrew Anderson. Here’s a picture of me from 2025.

While I’m academically trained to be, I don’t prefer to be concise.

So, with that being said, click here if you’re looking for my resume, and see my blog for more examples of my writing.

Or, read further to get some background information on who I am as a person before you continue on to view what I do as a professional (or amateur).

To begin, I am a student through Indiana University East’s online campus. I am earning my bachelor’s degree in English, with a concentration on technical and professional writing. I have significant experience with writing training materials and Standard Operating Procedures, with step-by-step procedural documents and their required safety information being my favorite. I particularly enjoy writing training materials for companies who allow a personal tone of voice in their extended training documents (with the solely professional tone reserved for SOPs).

Outside of my work history, which I discuss even further in the paragraphs below, I am a poet, an amateur photographer, and painter, as I enjoy the arts as much as I enjoy industry. Writing branches across both; there is an art in ensuring that everyone understands you, whether you’re writing about your own experiences or you’re writing about the shutdown of machines. Check out my page Philosophies for more information on my workplace safety, writing, and art philosophies.

Further, my work history tells more like a story. I first gained experience in industry when working as a custodian at WestRock, a papermill that produced recycled corrugated cardboard and recycled paper. I learned a lot about the paper industry while working there, and I had many interesting opportunities, such as spotting a patch of pitch on a paper machine that was causing a tear in a roll. And, importantly, I helped their Water Recycling Facility (WRF) with chemistry tasks, such as testing for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), solids tests, and titration. WestRock further introduced me to some of the most important aspects of workplace safety, inspiring me to always have safety at the forefront of my mind.

From there, I left for Bodycote to pursue heat treatment, an interesting field I had no experience in. I worked at the heat treat for almost three years, learning a lot about the thermal processing of steels, gaining significant machine operation and laboratory testing experience. I would not just build the loads of metal parts to be heat treated, but I would run them in the furnaces, adjusting times and temperatures as needed for a successful run, and I would then lab test them, checking their case depths, their hardness, and other important properties that customers requested. Here, I was engaged in safety, and I was also CPR and first-aid certified, a skill that I would later utilize there; me and the two other men involved were awarded a “Life Saving Award” from corporate, thanking us for our actions in saving the life of a truck driver having a heart attack. Daryl, the truck driver, was released from the hospital and went back to his home in Canada about a month after, with all of us relieved to hear our efforts truly paid off.

During this time, I also worked for Aspen Dental as a Documentation Specialist, helping them achieve an FDA compliant Quality Management System for their production laboratory, and created training materials for dental offices across the country as new resins were introduced for denture manufacturing. Unfortunately, this laboratory has since been shut down.

Now, I am working as a copper etcher at Boxcar Press, a job I thoroughly enjoy. Etching copper is a unique science, involving chemistry, art, and some minor other coppersmith skills, like deburring and polishing. Though I’m newer to it, beginning in May of 2025, it feels like a natural direction to move in. I am further engaging in safety here, with plans for me to aid safety efforts, teach people about workplace safety, and be responsible for maintaining it within our shop. I am thrilled to be in a career in the letterpress world; writing, graphic design, metallurgy, wood carving, polymer printing, and so much more come together within this world to create beautiful, customizable works of art. As I gain further experience, I’m excited to fully understand the world of letterpress like I did heat treatment, from etching to safety within a letterpress shop, and overall, the general history and community.

All of my work and life experiences influence my art and poetry; both sides of me, the creative and the professional, should be displayed together. They go hand in hand; an appreciation for what you do and for the life around you will absolutely contribute to your work ethic and work experience. If there’s anything you should know about me truly, it’s that I like to enjoy life and what I do for a living.

I hope you enjoy my work as you look around this site. Enjoy your stay; hopefully, you learn something or see something you like.
